Thousands of citizens of Bangladesh, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka created a momentous day in the history of the South Asia region to launch regional Sanitation campaign in South Asia. The campaign is calling on all South Asian governments, donors and citizens to join hands to tackle collectively the sanitation challenge in the region by increasing finances, targeting the resources towards poor and excluded people and groups to reduce service gap.

There are so many important issues and priorities to include in the future post Millennium Development Goal agenda. From my perspective of working on WASH in Rwanda, I believe that an emphasis on local and context-specific projects that prioritise water resource management and sustainability is essential as well acknowledging the role the private sector can play in meeting water and sanitation needs.

Last week I attended a consultation on water as part of the complex and wide ranging discussions that have been ongoing around the post 2015 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) development framework. Through the diverse and high level discussions one promising message stood out – a call for water to be a distinct goal in any future framework.
