The Second African Water Week takes place from 9 to 13 November 2009 in the spirit of carrying forward the commitments of the Sharm El Sheikh AU Summit on Water and Sanitation.

The event, now in its second year, was set up to create a forum for African water sector professionals, stakeholders and partners to discuss the opportunities and challenges of achieving water security for Africa's socio-economic development; as well as to formulate concrete policies, strategies and actions to accelerate water resources development and provision of services.

ANEW was represented by around 25 members from CSOs who took part in a consultative meeting on November 2009 in advance of the Water Week to review and prepare for the key themes that would be discussed.

Together African countries, UN agencies, civil society groups, the private sector and development cooperation partners will address the critical issues surrounding water and sanitation, the key to sustainable development on the continent.

The first African Water Week was held in Tunisia and attended by approximately 550 delagates from across the continent. This year's event is expected to attract more than 700 delegates.
