Multi-stakeholder Workshop on Water Governance and Human Rights

“Multi-Stakeholder Workshop on Water Governance and Human Rights”, took place on 31st October 2018 at Suryanshu Hotel, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.
This workshop is a collaborative effort of the Odisha Human Rights Commission, Freshwater Action Network South Asia, and WaterLex.
The aim of the workshop is the improved realisation of access to safe water and adequate sanitation, through strengthened capacities and increased activities of key stakeholders to promote and protect the Human Rights to Water and Sanitation (HRWS) and other water governance-related human rights, with a central focus on marginalized and vulnerable groups.
The workshop proposed to bring together the State Govt. officials serving in Commissions engaged in protecting and ensuring the Rights of the vulnerable groups like Children, Women, Persons With Disabilities, the SC-STs and Minorities, the civil society organisations, academicians and other stakeholders working in the sector of Water and Sanitation, with a view of fostering a partnership of all these players in ensuring safe water and sanitation to all concerned. It will also be an opportunity to share the knowledge of activities, achievements and forge new initiatives in the spirit of collaboration.
The content of the workshop will include introduction to a legal framework for HRWS and other water governance-related human rights and discussions on relevant topics within the context of achieving the goals of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda (SDGs), particularly the water and sanitation goal-SDG 6. Further, the current national and state realities concerning access to water and sanitation would be explored with discussion of best practices and solutions to meet current challenges.  From this dialogue, we seek to chart a way forward for realising Human Right to Water and Sanitation with a view to “leave no one behind.”
