ANEW hosts learning and sharing forum on equity and social inclusion in the WASH sector

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, 28 – 30 September 2010

As the EU Water Facility draws to a close, this learning forum for ANEW members at the end of this month will be an excellent chance for key actors to come together and share experiences on different approaches to equity and social inclusion in the water and sanitation sector.

ANEW is hosting a three-day learning and sharing forum for activists and practitioners to discuss Equity and Social Inclusion in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sector.

The forum being held in Dar es Salaam is organized and hosted by ANEW supported by the Tanzania Water and Sanitation Network (TAWASANET).

The forum will provide an opportunity for members to learn and share experiences on different approaches to equity and social inclusion in the water and sanitation sector. The forum aims at ensuring that equity, social inclusion and citizen engagement remain high on the agenda of the on-going reforms, plans and strategies. Several case studies will be presented and discussed to draw key lessons on what has worked and how it can be replicated elsewhere.

In particular the conference will:

  • Raise awareness of and promote debate on equity issues in the WASH sector
  • Exchange experiences on progress, good practices and challenges in promoting equity and inclusion in the WASH sector
  • Through thematic sessions and discussions, strengthen the capacity of practitioners and activists to influence policies and service delivery
  • Provide an opportunity for peer-peer learning and dialogue

ANEW is working closely with a team of journalists to document a series of case studies from its members on equity and inclusion in the WASH sector. In addition, several partners in the sector have conducted national and regional level studies to assess the issues of equity and inclusion in the on-going sector reforms.

This learning conference will provide a platform for present approaches and selected case studies to promote and document learning across the regions.

Three key themes will be discussed:

  • Improving equitable and pro-poor services in urban water supply
  • Innovative and effective sanitation approaches for urban poor and rural areas
  • Promoting partnerships to increase equitable access to WASH

"The forum will bring together around 80 participants from different African countries representing Civil Service Organizations (CSOs) that deal with water and sanitation issues. The goal is to develop the capacity of these CSOs in policy advocacy," said Jamillah Mwanjisi, ANEW’s Executive Secretary.

"Various issues, including the right to water and sanitation will also be discussed. About 20 case studies from different African countries highlighting innovative approaches and key lessons in promoting sanitation and protection of water sources for future generations will be presented at the forum."
