World Walks for Water and Sanitation by FANSA-Kerala Chapter

FANSA Kerala on World Water Day


On the eve of World Water Day-2012, FANSA Kerala Chapter celebrated the event with various activities including World Walks for Water and Sanitation, Seminars, Street-play, Cultural events with recitation of poems by 20 eminent malayalam poets on "rivers, streams, lakes, rain, water, hygiene and waste”.
Seminars were conducted in five districts in Kerala on different aspects of water and sanitation. Presentations were made by experts in the area followed by discussions. “Oaths” were made by all participants on the protection and preservation of water bodies. Further, resolutions passed against the “open defecation’ and “dumping of waste in open”.
“Street-play” was an important component of the event on small towns and villages in order to exhibit the importance of water and sanitation on the eve of World Water Day-2012.
The event was conducted in 20 different locations of Kerala with the participation
of 50 grass-root organizations. Elected representatives of Local bodies (Panchayats) were invited to join the event on “World Walks for Water and Sanitation”. The “Walks” were conducted towards the places of significance including Offices of District administration, Panchayat head quarters (PRIs), places of historical significance, on the bank of rivers, lakes, parks etc.
Groups of activists assembled for a “walks” towards such important places in order to draw the attention of all concerned including local administration, State and national administration, and above all the community as a whole for a change in their attitude and approach on water and sanitation.

Placards with messages on the importance of water and sanitation attracted all on the eve of World Water day. In some places, signatories including police officers were flag-off the event on “World Walks for Water and Sanitation”. Young people from educational institutions were largely participated the event on “Walks” for water and sanitation. Altogether, 5000 people from different walks of life participated the walks on water and sanitation in Kerala under the auspicious of FANSA- Kerala Chapter. The Walks were found to be very colorful with traditional drums (Chenda melam) and other cultural performance.
In Kollam district of Kerala, 20 eminent Malayalam (local language) Poets were participated the cultural events with recitation of poems on "rivers, streams, lakes, rain, water, hygiene and water pollution. All emphasized that “water is a life sustaining resources”.
Two books were released on the occasion of World Water Day-2012 based on water and climate change. Media attention (both print and visual) was one of the main attractions of the event.
