Village Education Resource Center

Over the three decades of working with the disadvantaged poor, the Village Education Resource Center (VERC) has helped communities to transform themselves to become self-reliant and improve their economic prospects through innovative methodologies.

VERC is a Bangladeshi non-government organization which focuses on livelihood development, education, capacity building, the environment and health as well as water and sanitation. The organization has seen particular success in its education work, having set up the Children’s Education Program, the original model for informal education in Bangladesh which is now being applied by a number of NGOs engaged in the country’s education sector. It also initiated models of community-run schools and adult education including innovative educational materials.

VERC pioneered Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in Mosmoil, Bangladesh. The approach works to mobilize communities to completely eliminate open defecation in their villages by recognizing that if just one person doesn’t use safe sanitation, it puts the entire community at risk.

“VERC has always recognized water, sanitation and hygiene (WASh) as crucial human development issues which is why we really value being part of a wider network through which we have gained valuable insights into important global processes,” says Shaikh A. Halim, Executive Director of VERC.

VERC has been a member of FAN in Bangladesh since 2007 and was one of the founding members of Freshwater Action Network South Asia (FANSA), playing an instrumental role in setting FAN up at the national level in Bangladesh. Yakub Hossain, VERC’s Deputy Executive Director, also serves as FAN Bangladesh Convenor and represents FANSA in the high level ‘Sanitation and Water for All’ coalition.
