Centre For Rural Studies and Development (CRSD)

The Centre for Rural Studies and Development (CRSD) is a member of FAN working in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. For over 15 years the CRSD has worked with the rural poor, especially Dalits and women, to organise themselves and fight for their rights; much of their work has focussed on developing the human, material and environmental resources of marginalised people.

The organisation is run by women, reaches out to over 100 villages and takes a rights-based approach to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene education.

CRSD have formed and now convene a state level alliance called the People’s Monitoring Committee (PMC) along with Dalit organizations, unions, networks and NGOs to monitor the Comprehensive Land Development Programme (CLDP) and the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) introduced by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Hilda Coelho, Director of CRSD participated in the second, third and fourth World Water Forum Meetings as a member of FAN. She also presented the NGO statement in the third World Water Forum at Kyoto.

CRSD has been working on Budget Analysis since 2001 for better budgetary allocations to the Dalits in proportion to their population. They are working committee members of AP Social Watch on the theme of `water’ as part of “Social Watch India,” which is monitoring the commitment of the Indian government in the implementation of Millennium Development Goals.
