60% rural India lives on less than Rs 35 a day: NSSO Report

About 60 per cent of the population in rural India lives on less than `35 a day while nearly as many of the city population sustain on only `66 a day, according to the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).

 
The 66th round NSSO survey carried out from July 2009 to June 2010 on income and expenditure stated that 10 per cent of the population lives on `15 a day in rural areas and `20 a day in urban areas. “About 60 per cent of the population eke out with these expenditures or less in rural and urban areas,” NSSO director general J Dash said.The all-India average monthly per capita consumer expenditure (MPCE) is `1,054 in rural areas and `1,984 in urban areas.
 
“The poorest 10 per cent of India’s rural population has an average MPCE of `453. The poorest 10 per cent of the urban population has an average MPCE of `599,” it said. The average MPCE in rural areas is the lowest in Bihar and Chhattisgarh with `780 each. Orissa and Jharkhand are the second lowest having `820 each. Kerala has the highest rural MPCE with `1,835 followed by Punjab `1,649 and Haryana `1,510. The highest urban MPCE is in Maharashtra with `2,437, followed by Kerala `2,413 and Haryana `2,321. It was lowest in Bihar with `1,238. The median level of MCPE is `895 in rural areas and `1,502 in urban India.
 
According to the study, food was estimated to account 57 per cent of the total expenditure of the average rural Indian household consumption during 2009-10, whereas it was 44 per cent in cities.
